It's a unique strategy in a format full of unique strategies, and it's definitely the kind of deck that has people saying, "oh shit you're playing Tezzerator?! That's so cool." If you're okay with the above notes on the deck, by all means give it a shot. I know myself and others have a lot of love for the deck. That said, if you want to play a Chalice of the Void deck and still play Force of Will, if you enjoy playing weird strategies where your opponent may be caught off guard simply because they're not familiar with a few of your cards, or you like artifacts and toolbox-style decks, it is a blast to pilot.īuild the deck on mtgo if you want, run it through some leagues and take some notes and post them here. Ideally you need two of those, and some people have gone up to three copies. One of our main toolbox cards, Transmute Artifact, is now ten times more expensive than it was when I bought mine at $40 apiece in 2017. You need 2-3 City of Traitors, at least 2 Underground Sea, and depending on your preference of Grixis or UB, a Volcanic Island and a Badlands, as well as 3-4 Mox Diamonds. The Tezzerator thread on the Source hasn't been posted on for over a year, if that tells you anything at all about the deck's current viability.Īdditionally, the deck is expensive to build. If you want to play traditional Tezz, you're getting incidentally hosed by Karn's passive, for a long time Oko being so prevalent in the format made the deck unplayable, not to mention that in general, it's just a slow, clunky deck that needs both lucky draws and a high pilot skill ceiling to be successful. If there's one thing my local Magic scene knows me for other than being the local Facebook admin, it's for playing Tezzerator. I am speaking as someone who has Grixis Tezz built, with every card with a German printing that has one represented. Quick edit: I should probably expand here. The tl dr is they printed a bunch of cards that allowed for more archetypes to play to the board, and that killed tezz as it's not an archetype built to beat those kinds of decks. This would allow you to both smooth out your draws and give you interaction for stuff like hymn. I definitely think there was a misstep with tezz along the way, the deck would have benefited greatly from moving from a chalice shell to more of a cantrip based one. They printed decay which was a big blow because it both allowed your opponents to interact with your engines, and also popularized BUGx decks playing cards like hymn and wasteland. The printing of delver was a pretty big nail in the coffin as now there was a top tier deck in the format that would actively punish you for playing expensive cards in your sol land deck that extensively used colored mana. Where most of your threats were able to go long, and overall your engines overpowered whatever UWx was doing. The old style of Tezz was built to beat "hard" control decks like top miracles and also old school control like stoneblade. The deck was long gone before karn and oko were even printed.
