I definitely think there was a misstep with tezz along the way, the deck would have benefited greatly from moving from a chalice shell to more of a cantrip based one. They printed decay which was a big blow because it both allowed your opponents to interact with your engines, and also popularized BUGx decks playing cards like hymn and wasteland. The printing of delver was a pretty big nail in the coffin as now there was a top tier deck in the format that would actively punish you for playing expensive cards in your sol land deck that extensively used colored mana. Where most of your threats were able to go long, and overall your engines overpowered whatever UWx was doing. The old style of Tezz was built to beat "hard" control decks like top miracles and also old school control like stoneblade. The deck was long gone before karn and oko were even printed.
